First Baptist Church Kindergarten

First Baptist Church Kindergarten, a private preschool founded in 1952, serves over 200 children ages two through five. The program is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and is licensed by the State of South Carolina. In 1989, the teaching staff began their study of the Reggio Approach, an educational philosophy which originated in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Integration of our interpretation of this philosophy guides the learning process.

Children are perceived as competent thinkers who may investigate possibilities with expertise. The classroom environment is established as a laboratory setting created to encourage each child's creative exploration. The foundational strength of the school encompasses the relationships built with each child and his family. Parents are partners in the learning process as they work together creating learning experiences with the teaching staff and the children. As each child develops strategies for research of his ideas, the child comes to know himself and his own beautiful giftedness.

About Us

First Baptist Church Kindergarten, in Greenville, South Carolina is located along the Reedy River and in the historic Cleveland Park area. Our school environment encourages a strong connection with our city. Classrooms are places of research alive with natural and recyclable materials gathered by children, families and educators. Outdoor areas, filled with flowers, plants and trees inspire the child to investigate his world. The Reedy River and the Swamp Rabbit Trail physically connect our school to our downtown and surrounding areas.

Children are competent and powerful researchers and constructors of their own knowledge. We believe the child's voice must be loved, honored and valued. We believe the child has the right to a stimulating environment and to a teacher who completely listens to and researches with the child and with his theories, questions, and "one hundred different languages." Building connective relationships is an integral part of understanding ourselves, with ourselves, with others and with our surroundings. Giving time to encourage, support, extend, and study the children's thinking and learning, we as educators, families, and children are partners in the research of life.

Help celebrate teachers' birthdays with a bouquet of fresh flowers from your garden, a baked treat, or a small item that is a teacher favorite. Please involve your child as much as possible. 30 people are needed to volunteer once or twice during the year.

Book Fair

As one of our bigger fundraisers, this event takes place during the last week of February/the first week of March. Volunteers are needed for set-up on Sunday, various shifts Monday - Thursday, Wednesday evening, and take down on Thursday. Volunteers may sign up for one or more shifts.

Carpool

This is a great way to meet other parents and their children. 125 volunteers are needed to assist children out of cars at the rotunda and the two's door. Time commitment is a 30 minute shift from 8:45 - 9:15 am one morning a month (or more, if possible).

Gardening

Volunteers are needed to help maintain the plantings on and around the playground including the addition of annuals for each season of the year.

Giving Tree

Lend a hand to our children as they hang socks and mittens on the Giving Tree in the rotunda in early December. Items are donated to a local charity. Commitment is one 8:50 - 9:20 a.m. shift.

Italian Connection

Volunteers are needed to help plan this exciting celebration of our school. Sign up to help with the silent auction, class creations, invitations, communication and decorating committees.

Library

Very flexible. Spend a few minutes while you are at school to help return books to the shelves. This is great when you are dropping off children in the morning, in your child's classroom, or even after helping with lockers or carpool. The FBCK library is run by volunteers - we need you help.

Locker Helper

Volunteers are needed for about 15 minutes (slightly longer in the K5 classes) each morning to help pin notes on bags, hang coats, etc. This can be done once per month or more often, if possible.

Lost and Found

Help place and remove clothing on a clothes line at the carpool line several times throughout the year or take unclaimed clothing to the appropriate agency for donation.

Love Luncheon

Each year, near Valentine's Day, PAK shows our teachers how much they are loved with a "Love Luncheon!" Ten volunteers are needed to prepare a meal, serve, and clean up afterwards. The time commitment is Monday, February 8, 2010 from about 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Lunch Delivery

Show our teachers that we appreciate them by volunteering on Fridays between 11:30 and 11:45 to pick up teacher lunches at an area restaurant and deliver them to FBCK. Volunteers are assigned Fridays on a rotating schedule.

Recyclables

Volunteers are needed to solicit recyclables that our children can use in class for their own creations. These recyclables may come from local businesses, friends of FBCK, and/or parents. Some examples may include paper products, fabric, plastic items, writing materials, seeds and garden items, etc.

Recycling Delivery

Volunteers are needed to pick up recycling items from FBCK and delivery them to a recycling facility. Commitment is approximately two to three times per month. Time is flexible.

Shoe Drive

We need your help collecting shoes during the fall and spring shoe drives and organizing for delivery to local agencies.

Special Occasions

Help us prepare food for special teacher luncheons sponsored by PAK on two teacher workdays: one in August and one in May, and assist with other special occasions through out the year.

Sponsorships

Help the chairs line up corporate sponsorships and/or programs that benefit our school. Store credit cards and their reward programs and grocery store partner cards are included in this committee.

T-Shirts and Bookbags

Volunteer to sell t-shirts and bookbags on Parent's Night. Volunteers are also needed to help distribute t-shirts and bookbags when the orders arrive.
